Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships provide you with an excellent starting point for a rewarding career in any number of areas. Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications and workplace experience.
The Apprenticeship pathway can start at the age of 14 and can end with a degree or even a masters or doctoral. How far you go and what career you choose is up to you.
What is a Young Apprenticeship?
The Young Apprenticeship programme is a new route at key stage 4. The programme allows motivated and able pupils to study for vocational qualifications, not just in the classroom, but also in college, with training providers and in the workplace. Pupils are based in school, and follow the core National Curriculum subjects - but for two days a week (or equivalent) they also work towards nationally recognised vocational qualifications delivered by their local Young Apprenticeship Partnership. Young Apprenticeships are aimed at pupils reaching an agreed level in the key stage 3 SATs or teacher assessments, who are attracted to a more practical style of learning. They offer the chance to gain a taste of ‘real work' and lay the foundations for a post-16 Apprenticeship whilst retaining the full range of progression options for future training or study.

Apprentices do real jobs for real employers. There are different levels of Apprenticeship available, all leading to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Key Skills qualifications and, in most cases, a technical certificate such as a BTEC. An Apprenticeship will provide hands-on experience, skills and knowledge and the qualifications needed for a chosen career. Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers in the industry to ensure relevant training and knowledge is integrated. Apprenticeships include the skills for the industry and as an Apprentice you will be able to perform in your job and increase your employability skills. An Apprenticeship can only be achieved with the support of an employer.
How do Apprenticeships work?
Learning is flexible to meet the needs of you and your employer. The Apprenticeship framework is achieved through a mix of on and off-the- job training so that you can develop your industry specific skills within the workplace together with planned support, training and development from your Apprenticeship Provider.
Apprenticeship providers include a wide range of different organisations including colleges, local authorities, not for profit group training associations and independent private training companies, all are quality assured and inspected against rigorous standards, receiving funding to deliver their approved Apprenticeship frameworks.
Regardless of the type of organisation, all Apprenticeship providers work in partnership with employers to ensure the training and development meets industry requirements.
