Prestigious global visits await Scunthorpe students

While most students were taking a well earned rest following a busy exam period, three John Leggott College students prepared for trips to the major new countries of the global economy for the British Council.
Kimberley Warrillow, Ammar Ahmed and Chidera Dimude have all been awarded places on the new Prime Minister’s Global Fellowship scheme.
They will be heading to India, Brazil and China to gain first-hand experiences of what globalisation means for people around the world and are three of only 100 fellows taking part in the scheme.
Kimberley (18) will be spending six weeks in New Delhi and Bangalore in India where she will have the opportunity to study the culture, language and history of the country before volunteering in an Indian school and then becoming a guest of a global company.
“I’m really excited,” she said.
“Travel is something I am really passionate about and I like learning about other cultures, so this trip is going to be really special.
“I will also be coming home to share my experiences with other people to develop their understanding of the Indian culture too.”
Kimberley plans to study Geography at Lancaster University from September and would eventually like to work as a teacher. She has already visited the Ukraine and China in the last two years so is hoping this trip will build upon these experiences.
Ammar (also 18) will be experiencing life in Brazil as he spends time in various cities including Rio de Janeiro.
“I was so happy to find out that I would be visiting Brazil, as it is a country with such a diverse population. I’m hoping the experience will help me to improve my social skills with people from a range of backgrounds.
“As a big football fan, I’m also looking forward to visiting Brazil’s football grounds.”
Ammar applied for the fellowship programme as he had decided to take a gap year before going on to university to study medicine.
During his time in Brazil he will follow a ‘family life and healthcare’ programme and hopes to carry out research into the state health provision.
“I’m lucky to have been given a programme which fits into my career aim so well. As a future doctor I will have to work with a diverse group of people and so any experience of this nature will be beneficial,” Ammar added.
Chidera (also 18) will be visiting China with other fellows from schools and colleges across the country.
Assistant Principal (External Relations) at John Leggott College, Alison Burtle said: “All three of the students are deserving of their places on the Prime Minister’s Global Fellowship and I wish them all the best in their travels.
“To have gained three places out of only 100 awarded by the British Council is fantastic and demonstrates the high calibre of the applications submitted by our students.
“We look forward to welcoming the students back into college in September to hear all about their experiences.”
As part of the fellowship programme, all three students will be given their opportunity to share their experiences with other students at John Leggott College and they will also be invited to Downing Street to share what they have learnt with the Prime Minister.
