Six top science students from John Leggott College have helped to start celebrations of the bicentenary of Charles Darwin’s birth by attending a prestigious International Student Summit in London earlier this month.
Hosted by the British Council, the Calouste-Gulbenkian Foundation and the Natural History Museum, the three-day event featured discussions and explanations of evolutionary science with leading scientists.
Holly Chapman (16), Emily Todd (17), Samarth Ranjan (17), Chris Watson (17), Ashley Steeper (17) and Rebecca Penfold (16) were specially selected by their tutors to go to the International Student Summit: Darwin and Contemporary Science because of their achievements in the classroom.
They heard talks on issues including DNA discovery and use, GM crops and the development of antibiotics as well as taking part in ‘Question Time’ activities with the speakers.
There was also time for a tour of the Natural History Museum and a ‘flight’ on the London Eye.
Emily Todd (17), who is studying physics, biology, maths and further maths, said she really enjoyed the summit and having the opportunity to discuss contemporary issues.
“The summit was an extension of our knowledge and studies at college and so we were able to look into certain issues deeper.
“I really enjoyed being a VIP at the Natural History Museum and the discussions around the topic of GM crops, as it really interests me.
“On a personal note, I also enjoyed visiting London and meeting international students who were also attending the summit.”
Emily has just completed her AS exams and hopes to studying for a physics degree after completing her A Levels.
The group was accompanied by the College’s 14-19 Curriculum Support Officer, Wendy Chaplain.
“The summit presented a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop their knowledge of issues in contemporary science,” Wendy said.
“There were some really interesting topics on the agenda and some sparked huge moral debate.
“The students thoroughly enjoyed the event and are now able to bring the thought-provoking issues back to the classroom to enhance their approach to their work.”
