About: WHITGIFT SCHOOL
Working together for Excellence

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Whitgift School.
Whitgift School is a learning centre, which is widely used by community groups in the evening and at weekends. We believe that learning, and the development of skills, are positive life enhancing experiences for everyone.
We believe that each young person is an individual. Our job is to foster the different strengths of all our students - whether they are academic, creative or sporting.
We aim to give each student the space, time and opportunity to develop their potential to the full so they are equipped for life in a fast-changing society. Our principal curriculum objectives are to provide students with the knowledge and skills they will require as an adult. We provide a caring and sympathetic environment in which they can develop high self-esteem, standards and moral values. We have high expectations of our young people, encouraging them to develop positive behaviour and to respect others in school and in the community.

Transition and settling In
We have a comprehensive induction programme, including a two-day visit to the school during Year 6. Working closely with our feeder primary schools, we ensure the transition from Year 6 to Year 7 is as smooth as possible.

Students are allocated to a tutor group under the care of a personal tutor who supervises all aspects of their welfare and progress. Tutor groups are mixed ability with equal numbers of boys and girls, taking into account friendships advised by our partner primary schools.

The aim of every tutor is to get to know parents and to create for each child a happy, safe and secure base within the school. Wherever possible, students stay in the same tutor group with the same tutor throughout their time at the school.

Tutors are supported by the Student Health and Welfare Officer, Educational Welfare Officers, Connexions staff, office staff, lunchtime supervisors and a caretaking staff.

My association with Whitgift began 20 years ago and I am totally commited to its continued success. I hope you will want your son or daughter to share in the educational experience that we offer.

A curriculum to challenge and inspire

Each student is placed in one of three groups:
l higher (most able students)
l intermediate (average ability students)
l foundation (least able students)

This decision is based on their performance in the Key Stage 2 SATs examinations in English, Mathematics and Science and the information provided by their primary school. This means that we can meet the needs of all students irrespective of their academic ability. A student will be taught in the same ability group for all subjects.

Years 7, 8 and 9 (Key Stage 3)
Students follow the National Curriculum, which covers a broad range of subjects with all students taking French. More able students have the opportunity to study a second modern foreign language in Years 8 and 9. Foundation students will study less French in Years 8 and 9 to enable them to concentrate on literacy and numeracy.

Years 10 and 11 (Key Stage 4)
Students will continue to study English, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communication Technology, Design Technology, RE, Citizenship and PE. Each student will also be able to follow further courses from a range of subjects including Business Studies, French, German, Spanish, Leisure and Tourism,
vocationally-based qualifications, Geography, History, Art and Design, Drama, Dance, Music and GCSE PE. The courses will be tailored to meet the needs of individual students.

Independent learning skills
Homework is set regularly and is regarded as essential to the learning process. Each student has a passport to help them organise their workload. Students can receive support from teaching assistants, mentors or from our librarian.

We provide after-school revision classes and booster classes for students as they prepare for the examinations in Years 9 and 11. We also provide extra classes for Year 11 students during the holidays, particularly at February half term and Easter.

Assessment, monitoring progress and target setting
We formally assess each student every half term and during each academic year we send a total of five reports home to parents.
We believe it is essential for students and parents to receive quality information at regular intervals about academic, personal and social progression.

Every individual counts
At Whitgift we are committed to ensuring that young people of all abilities receive a high-quality education. Our team of specialist teachers and teaching assistants aim to meet the needs of all our students, ranging from those who are the most able and talented to those with special educational needs.

Other students may need a more personalised curriculum. Our staff receive invaluable support from our parents and external agencies.

“I am proud to have been associated with Whitgift School for 23 years and I know that students receive a very good education in a real community school.”
