About: St Hugh’s is now known as St Hugh’s Communication and Interaction Specialist CollegeFour years ago the Council reorganised its special school provision and St Hugh’s, which previously was an all age special school, became the nominated secondary special education provision for the authority in September 2002. The school had an extensive rebuild after the reorganisation which provided more appropriate and extensive accommodation to meet the needs of the increasingly diverse new students. In January 2005 St Hugh’s had a full OFSTED inspection which recognised that it was a good school with some very good features. Further new build is planned in the near future within the local Authority’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.St Hugh’s, since its inception, has been an equal and active partner in the Scunthorpe South Secondary Collaborative(SSSC) which is made up of five other secondary schools as well as being part of the wider community of all North Lincolnshire’s 11 - 19 provision. St Hugh’s mission statement under the banner of “Working Together for Success” has seven objectives encompassing our beliefs for St Hugh’s students, families, staff team, culture, wider community, environment and curriculum. For students at St Hugh’s we are committed to “developing students’ abilities so that they are as independent, happy, and confident as possible enabling them to become responsible citizens who contribute positively to society as active participants”. At a regional level we are active members of the Regional Learning hub for promoting the “Student Voice” and St Hugh’s was the first special school in the country to have students take part in the Regional Specialist School Student Forum. We are also an accredited centre that supports the ICT Register which also supports us as the LA Resource Base for ICT Access. Improving Communication and Interaction skills clearly supports the Every Child Matters agenda and would support our developing work towards a common ECM language across all agencies and the voluntary sector. In particular it supports the “Making a Positive Contribution” strand. Improving and developing children and young people’s communication and interaction capabilities will allow them to not only actively participate confidently in the strategies that will develop from the extended schools agenda but to influence them. We at St Hugh’s have been very active participants in developing the local authority’s 14 - 19 strategy and in particular the work related learning strand. We are currently:-• Developing classroom digital video monitoring facilities that allow non intrusive observation of good practice in communication/interaction skills• Establishing and promoting a friendly drop-in resource/training centre to allow our staff and partners to browse and borrow equipment• Improving our classrooms ICT infrastructures to improve further our communication and interaction strategies• Improving the quality of the learning environments for ASD and PMLD students through improved climate control• Developing students’ skills and their capacity to use mobile phones to improve their communication abilities between themselves and their families• Planning to provide ICT equipment for those families who are unable to access it to improve their Communication and Interaction strategies• Establishing and promoting an exciting and engaging ICT learning platform that links home and school which both parent and student can access• Further extending the Social Use of Language Groups(SULP/CALL) into our consortia, by working with their staff• Providing outreach as well as in-house opportunities for staff to work along side other staff to promote the strand and celebrate their achievements• Further improving and sharing the AAC facilities and equipment• Developing a Children Services’ audit tool to support schools and services to monitor Communication and Interaction practice at an individual, classroom and whole school level• Further developing a bank of resources that promotes exemplar practice that supports the audit tool via our existing web site• Developing a range of in-house(establishing a training room) and distance learning modules for schools, services staff that develops their skills, knowledge and practice around Communication and Interaction• Promoting and providing innovatory ICT that encourages supportive access to enable the development of Communication and Interaction skills in our family of collaboratives• Extending our role as a key partner in multi agency projects to establish a local integrated assessment service for Assistive Technology for Learning and Augmentative and Assisted Communication• Aiming to become a leading edge school for the region promoting and celebrating good practice in Communication and Interaction
