Course Summary

Cadets will train to be Engineering or Navigation officers on commercial vessels as part of shipping lines or cruise ships. They will be paid a training allowance and live in halls of residence for their first year of training and spend 2 of the 5 Phases of training at sea. Training will take place at Modal Training in Immingham and in the Engineering workshops at the Grimsby Institute.

Cadets can take the Engineering or the Navigation route for their training.

Following an application on Lincs2 we will contact you and forward your application to one of the Training Management Companies with whom we work to provide this training.

Cadets should be 17 at the start of the programme.

Course Details

The Cadet programme has Five phases which include the following

Phase 1 - 18 weeks

Basic Training to include enclosed space training

Level 3 Diploma in Maritime Studies

Shipboard induction

First sea phase introduction

Phase 2 - 34 weeks

First sea phase - on board inductions and familiarisation

Distance Learning for shipboard operations unit

Phase 3 - 24 weeks

HNC Nautical Studies

Second Sea phase introduction

Phase 4 - 55 weeks

Second sea phase - practical tasks as per training record book

HND project and support via distance learning

Phase 5 - 10 weeks for HNC or 26 weeks for HND

Standards of Training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers - Advanced training

Completing HNC or HND in appropriate area of study


How will it be delivered and assessed?

Cadets will work in the Engineering workshops at the Grimsby Institute and use the simulators at Modal Training for the maritime aspect of the courses. They will also spend time at sea learning in a practical way about work aboard ships.

Entry requirements

Cadets should have a minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 4 - 9 (or A*-C) including Maths, English and a Science based subject. Those with a level 2 or 3 certificate or Diploma in Engineering should contact us to discuss your application.
