Course Details
Learners will get to study in our realistic and well-equipped therapy rooms which will allow you to experience salon-life under the guidance of our highly-trained, inspirational tutors. A typical day of study could see you learning about manicures and nail art, skin treatments and creating individual looks. The range of skills you will cover throughout your journey include:
Level 1
Introduction to the hair and beauty sector – Explore the diverse world of hair and beauty
Presenting a professional image – Learn the importance of personal grooming, standards and professional behaviour
Health and safety in the salon – Understand how to create a secure and hygienic environment
Basic manicure – Develop the skills to perform a simple manicure, including nail shaping, cuticle care and polish application
Skin care – Learn the different skin types and using professional products
Basic make-up application – Learn techniques and colour matching
The art of photographic make-up – Create make-up looks suitable for camera work
Creating a hair and beauty image – Work on themed projects to develop a creative final look
Salon reception duties – Develop communication and organisational skills to manage appointments, handle payments and provide excellent customer service
Nail art application – Express your creativity through decorative nail designs
Themed face painting – Explore artistic face painting techniques
How will it be delivered and assessed?
When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.
Entry requirements
Level 1 – 3 GCSEs at grade 2 or above
Your next steps...
Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby such as Special Effects Make up and Prosthetics.
Career paths open can include: Beauty Therapist, Salon Owner, Spa Manager or Make Up Artist.
