Fabrication and Welding Level 1

Fabrication and welding is a highly practical course in the industry standard workshops and can leading to a career as a steel erector, sheet metal worker or other related jobs.

In fabrication and welding you will be preparing and joining different types of metal using different processes. You will learn how to interpret engineering drawings and symbols to make accurate items. You will also learn about aspects of the trade such as cutting, forming and joining metal and using different methods of carrying out sheet metal cutting, forming and assembly including oxy-fuel equipment and manual metal arc and TIG welding. Our Engineering and Renewable Energy Centre offers you the unique chance to work with a variety of welding equipment as well as diagnostic testing equipment which has been installed to help you develop the up-to-date skills the industry is looking for.

Guest speakers and visitors from the likes of Jacobs Field Services, 4 Matic, Centrica and Millennial Global will impart their knowledge and experience while our dedicated tutors, who all have industrial backgrounds, ensure the best possible training and work closely with industrial specialists to guarantee the department stays at the forefront of welding and cutting technology and continue to have strong links with The Welding Institute (TWI) and the Association for Welding Training and Education (AWFTE). With the current workforce shortage in mind the demand for people with fabrication and welding skills will only continue to grow and you can expect to earn around £16k - £31k a year. Previous trips have included to the Hartlepool power station and the Drax power station.

Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process. The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.

Minimum of grade 3 in GCSE Maths and English. A taster and interview will be offered to those with lower grades.

Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby or other other University.

Potential career paths could be: Sheet Metal Worker, Plater, Pipefitter, Welder or Steel Erector.
