Course Summary
Are you looking to develop a career in ornamental horticulture? This Horticulture T Level course, focusing on ornamental plants and landscaping, will give you the knowledge and skills you need. You'll enjoy the perfect combination of theoretical study in the classroom and hands-on experience in our dedicated horticultural facilities and with our industry partners.
T Levels have been developed in collaboration with employers to meet the needs of the industry. As a Level 3 qualification equivalent to 3 A Levels, this course offers a balance of classroom theory, practical learning, and a hands-on industry placement. You will spend 55% of your time in the classroom and the other 45% involved in practical activities, including time spent in professional horticulture environments. The focus of practical activities will vary with the seasons. Additionally, T Levels carry UCAS points, allowing you to progress to university if you choose.
Course Details
This course aims to provide you with practical and knowledge-based learning, with specialist components focused on landscaping, caring for planted areas and plant science. Allow you to study and develop skills in real working environments, preparing you for employment. To give you the knowledge you need to progress to university level study, should you wish.
You will study:
- Sustainability, including environmental legislation, sustainable development, climate change and waste management principles
- The principles of horticulture including; plant science, plant propagation, establishing plants and maintaining planted areas
- Employment rights and responsibilities and progression opportunities within the sector
- The various sectors of the horticulture industry; turf management, ornamental horticulture, hard landscaping, garden design
- The supply chain and principles of managing a horticultural business
- Business organisations, enterprise skills and project management
- Characteristics protected by equality legislation
- Communication
- Principles of customer care
- Finance
- Health and safety
- Information and data
- Occupational specialism: Ornamental Horticulture
How will it be delivered and assessed?
You will learn through classroom sessions, practical work and blended learning. You will usually be on campus four days per week. You will need to undertake a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) of on-the-job experience through an industry placement.
You will be assessed through formative assessments, synoptic assessments and examinations.
Entry requirements
You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above. These must include English and Maths.
