IGNITE: Helping Young People lead their Communities

IGNITE is Voluntary Action North East Lincolnshire’s (VANEL) newest Big Lottery funded 3 year ‘Reaching Communities’ programme.

The IGNITE team work with young people and adults aged 16 to 30 who are interested in volunteering and/or leading on projects, events, clubs and campaigns which benefit their community.

Since the programme launched in August 2016, the IGNITE team have supported young people on a variety of youth-led projects including:

  • vintage theme coffee morning event to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support
  • fundraising sports tournaments
  • supported a bereaved young mum as she organised a fundraising balloon release
  • supported young people to organise Battle of the Band’s music events
  • an awareness campaign surrounding sexual assault
What’s In It for me?
  • a great way of giving something back to your community
  • an excellent way to meet new people
  • an opportunity to learn new skills
  • to gain work experience
  • a boost to education and employment prospects
  • to increase self-confidence
  • up to date references

Volunteering has also been shown to:

  • reduce stress
  • combat depression
  • keep you mentally and physically active
Tips about volunteering:
  • choose something you enjoy and can put your skills to best use
  • Don’t take on too much! Start out small, then there’s room for growth!
  • don’t be pressurised into doing more hours or roles than you are happy with
  • use volunteering as a way of bettering yourself
  • remember to always be professional
  • if something isn’t working, ask yourself why and take action. Not enjoying working in a hospital as much as you thought, but still want to do something with people? That’s okay! There are lots of other volunteer opportunities out there
  • if you feel unsure or unhappy about something, tell someone how you feel. Your host organisation has a responsibility to ensure your safety and comfort. They should be able and happy to help
  • Enjoy yourself!
