Course Summary

This course is ideal for learners who have a keen interest in drama and the performing arts industry. The course is designed to develop existing performance skills and deepen your understanding of dramatic theory. If you enjoy live performance and want to learn more about creating your own unique material, or wish to develop your theatrical design skills, this course will support you in achieving these goals.

There will also be additional opportunities to watch professional productions at regional venues as part of the course.

You could complement your studies with enrichment activities including Irish dancing, mixed voice choir, jazz rock band or orchestra.

This qualification is valued by many employers recruiting for people-orientated careers.

Course Details

The units are:

  • Devising: You will work as part of a small group to create an original performance piece. This will be developed from an extract from an existing play text and will be influenced by the work of one key Theatrical Practitioner.
  • Text in Performance: Undertake a key role in the teacher-directed production of a full-length play. Also perform a monologue or duologue of your choice. These performances will be to an audience and examined by an external examiner.
  • Theatre Makers in Practice:
  • You will complete a written exam comprising of:
  • A live theatre evaluation
  • Practical exploration and study of a play text
  • Practical exploration and analysis of a practitioner associated with a specific play text

How will it be delivered and assessed?

This course is assessed by coursework (40%) exams (40%) and a practical performance (20%).

Entry requirements

GCSE English at Grade 5 is preferred, but not compulsory with an average points score of 3.2 or above with a strong interest in performing.
