Course Summary

You will be part of the Care department during your course working in a practical way finding out about working with young children.

Course Details

This level 2 qualification aims to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding of babies and young children up to the age of 7, with applied knowledge in the early years (0 – 5.) This qualification meets the Department for Education’s Level 2 full and relevant criteria for a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner in the workforce. Additionally, you will also complete a Paediatric First Aid Qualification.

This course will give you an understanding of the core knowledge and skills relevant to Education and Childcare, linking to current practices. This will include digital, Math’s and English skills. You will be able to experience opportunities to manage and improve your own performance and develop appropriate competence to meet employer expectations. There are also opportunities to take part in practical sessions in our state of the art nursery and sensory rooms, and to learn Makaton sign language. Throughout the year you will attend a work placement to consolidate and practice using your knowledge and skills.

Students are encouraged to take part in experiences throughout the year which includes the Nursery World Exhibition, the Forest School experience and hearing guest speakers which have included Sir Robert Winston (British professor, medical doctor, scientist.)

Key skills that you will develop include: safeguarding, health and safety, child development, how to assess and plan sessions and reflective practice.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process. The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.

Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3 (previously D) or above including Maths and English language OR Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3 or above including Maths and English language and relevant subject qualification OR Minimum of Level 1 course in chosen subject at merit or above and English language and Maths at Level 1.

Your next steps...

Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby or other other University.
