Course Summary

This course has been developed for ambitious people wishing to pursue a career within the equine industry. It will provide you with an excellent opportunity to develop a sound knowledge and understanding in horse care and or riding through a mix of practical, classroom and work-based study. This course allows for some flexibility in the units taken. Some units that may be taken dependent on the interest of the individual are below. Please note, the units studied may vary depending on the options chosen. Riding and non-riding options are available.

  • Undertake routine stable duties
  • Horse handling and grooming
  • Horse tack and equipment
  • Health and safety for the land-based industries
  • Equine health and welfare
  • Introduction to lungeing horses
  • Riding horses under supervision
  • Introduction to equine
  • Anatomy and physiology

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Work will be assessed using a variety of written assignments, practical assessments and exams. GCSE/Functional Skills exams in English and Maths will be compulsory if these have not been achieved at grade 4 when you start the course. Level 2 courses can be achieved to a pass, merit, distinction or distinction * grade.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above. Equivalent qualifications may also be considered.For the riding option, you must also demonstrate a suitable level of riding. We also have a maximum weight limit of 13 stone.

Equipment required

  • Sturdy footwear, a riding hat (Snell or PAS015 standard), gloves, dark coloured t-shirt, jumper, coat and a basic grooming kit for equine based practical sessions.
  • A white laboratory coats, available via the college online

You will be able to progress to the Level 3 Advanced Technical Certificate in Equine Management or an apprenticeship programme.
