Course Summary

If you'd like to work in land-based engineering, this is the qualification for you. It is designed to provide you with a wide range of specialist technical practical skills and detailed knowledge and understanding which will equip you to progress to employment or to further training within the land-based engineering industry. You will work with local employers who will contribute to your knowledge and deliver training. Employers will provide demonstrations and talks on the industry and where possible work placements will also be provided by the employers. This practical-based training is ideal preparation for gaining employment in the land-based engineering industry or specialist further study.

  • Vehicle engine technology
  • Calculations for service engineering and workshop processes
  • Testing, servicing and repairing engines, vehicle systems, electric systems and hydraulic systems
  • Health and safety
  • Testing, servicing and repairing land-based machinery and equipment
  • English and/or Maths (if not achieved at grade 4)

Entry requirements

You will need four GCSEs at grade 4 or equivalent, preferably including English and Maths, or a relevant BTEC Level 2 / First Diploma or equivalent. Maths at grade 4 or higher is desirable due to the content of some of the units. You will be individually assessed as part of the interview process to determine suitability. One satisfactory reference is also needed.
