A Level History

This course is ideal for learners who, are interested to find out more about events and people of the past.

The Humanities department are also hoping to run future trips to Russia, visiting Moscow and St Petersburg.

This course is assessed by exams and a coursework element.

Russia 1917-1991: Students will study the leaders of Russia from 1917 - 1985 and how their polices affected the government, the economy, social developments and how they controlled the Russian people through propaganda, arts and culture and the secret police. Students will also study the reasons for the fall of the USSR, 1985 - 1991.

Mao's China 1949-1976: Students will study how the communist leader, Mao Tse Tung, ruled China and how the policies of the communists affected the government, the economy and society.

British History 1780-1928: Protest, agitation and Parliamentary reform in Britain. Students will study how the vote was gradually extended to more and more people throughout the nineteenth century, including women and how Parliament was changed as a result. Students will also study 5 themes in depth, including the rise of radicalism, Chartism (1836 - 1848), trade union militancy, women's enfranchisement and the campaign to repeal the Contagious Diseases Act.

Coursework: Students will research independently the role of Stalin in the purges by reading what historians have written about this and then they will write a 4,000 word essay on which interpretation they think is the most convincing.

This course is assessed by exams and coursework.

GCSE Grade 5 in English with an average points score of 4.2 or above.
