Animal Care Level 3

Dreaming of being a zookeeper, vet nurse, or dog groomer? This course will give you the knowledge and experience to turn those dreams into reality. Studying for a vocational qualification is a practical option and you will learn from tutors who are industry specialists with great facilities. Animal Care students will be working in the Animal House with a wide range of different animals.

If you’re interested in a job working with animals – whether it’s in health, welfare, or management, this course is a great place to start. You’ll learn how the animal care world is changing, with a focus on being more sustainable, and pick up hands-on skills to succeed.

Animal welfare, health and nutrition, Animal handling, Animal weighing, Biology, anatomy and physiology,Using maths to solve ecology and conservation problems, Identifying signs of poor health in animals, Preventative treatments to maintain good health, Management of animal care-related businesses, Health and safety, Animal life cycles, Animal behaviour , Animal breed development, Advancements in the animal care industry.

Level 3 – 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths

This course can lead directly into employment or further study, such as:

Veterinary care assistant or animal nursing roles in clinics, rescue centres or shelters

Progression to FdSc Vetinary Nursing* or FdSc Animal Welfare* at the University Centre Grimsby after your Level 3 course. (*Subject to validation)

Specialist pathways in veterinary nursing, animal behaviour or welfare sciences

Animal training – Become an animal trainer or behaviour specialist, working with pets, working dogs or exotic animals to improve behaviour through positive reinforcement

Zoo management – Get involved in the day-to-day care, enrichment and conservation of zoo animals, while also supporting education and visitor engagement

Pet shop management and education – Lead and manage a pet retail business or use your knowledge to advise customers and promote responsible pet ownership
