Course Summary

Are you ambitious and wishing to pursue a career within the equine industry? This course will provide you with an excellent opportunity to develop a sound knowledge and understanding in horse care and or riding through a mix of practical, classroom and work-based study. It allows for some flexibility in the units taken so that you can tailor the course to your interests, including a riding and non-riding option. Course Details

To develop your knowledge and practical skills, ready for a career within the equine industry.

You will learn to:

Carry out and understand the principles of feeding and watering horses
Undertake routine stable duties
Undertake horse handling
Fit and maintain horse tack and clothing
Undertake work-related experience in the land-based industries
Introduction to riding horses on the flat
English and Maths, if not achieved at grade 4

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will normally be in college three days a week. Weekend duties will also be timetabled, approximately one weekend day in each month. You will undertake 150 hours of external work placement. This includes one week off-site and duties at our Equine Centre. You will be assessed using a variety of written assignments, practical assessments and formally externally marked exams. Level 2 courses can be achieved to a pass, merit, distinction or distinction * grade.

Entry requirements

You will need four GCSEs at grade 3 or above. You must have grade 2 or 3 in Maths, English and Science. Equivalent qualifications may also be considered.

Equipment required

Sturdy footwear. Riding hat (Snell or PAS015 standard). Gloves. Dark coloured t-shirt, jumper, and coat. Laboratory coat. Core texts to support studies.

Your next steps...

You will be able to progress to the Level 3 Advanced Technical Certificate in Equine Management or an apprenticeship programme.

Work in commercial stable yards, for professional equestrian teams, in equine therapy, equine events and shows centres, at riding schools and many more.
