Course Details

This course aims to provide you with both practical and knowledge-based learning, with specialist components focused on landscaping, caring for planted areas, plant science and design. Allow you to study and develop skills in real working environments, preparing you for employment. To give you the knowledge you need to progress to the T Level in Ornamental Horticulture, should you wish.

You will learn:

  • Sustainability in horticulture, the latest developments in garden design and naturalistic planting schemes.
  • The principles of horticulture including; plant science, plant propagation, establishing plants and maintaining planted areas
  • The various sectors of the horticulture industry; turf management, ornamental horticulture, hard landscaping, garden design
  • Health and safety for the land-based industries
  • Working in the horticulture industry
  • Plant naming, identification, selection and science
  • Preparation, planting and maintenance of plants
  • Care, maintenance and use of tools, equipment and machinery
  • Horticultural business practices
  • Commercial gardening and landscaping
  • Developing hard landscape features

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will learn through classroom sessions, practical work and blended learning. You will usually be on campus three days per week. You will need to undertake a minimum of 150 hours of on-the-job experience through an industry placement.

You will be assessed through formative assessments, synoptic assessments and examinations.

Entry requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above. These must include English and Maths.
