Course Summary

Ready to leave the classroom and get stuck into something more hands on and practical? Brickwork could be for you! You will be working in the Brick Workshop at our Nuns Corner Campus learning how to mix mortar and build different types of structures.

Course Details

During your course you will learn in a practical environment about building methods and construction technology as well as basic brick and block laying skills, cavity walling, planning and measuring, site surveying, forming masonry structures and interpreting drawings. Here you will also get to learn about the principles of construction and the health and safety aspects of working on a building site.

You will undertake mandatory work experience to develop a wide range of skills by working on live construction sites, and we work closely with many regional businesses.

As one of our learners you will have the opportunity to compete at the Guild of Bricklayers and Skillbuild WorldSkills competitions. Previous trips have included; Birmingham WorldSkills event, manufacturers, modular building visits and local building sites.

The course includes the following modules - Conducting site surveys, planning, precise measuring and accuracy, mixing cement and mortar, laying bricks, laying breeze blocks and more.


How will it be delivered and assessed?

When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process. The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.

Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3 (previously D) or above including Maths and English language OR Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3 or above including Maths and English language and relevant subject qualification OR Minimum of Level 1 course in chosen subject at merit or above and English language and Maths at Level 1.

Your next steps...

Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into a range of employment or an apprenticeship opportunities, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby (HNC/HND in Construction) or other universities.
