Course Summary

During this course you will learn a host of valuable Carpentry and Joinery skills including, using hand tools, working from plans, preparing and installing floorboards, joists and window frames and much more. Timber is an important part of any structure, and carpenters and joiners prepare the wooden parts of a building. Usually a joiner will work from plans to prepare the materials; the carpenter then puts them in position. Throughout this course, you will have the opportunity to hone and perfect both your joinery and carpentry skills providing you with a sturdy foundation for future employment.

Course Details

Work Experience:

Work experience is a mandatory element of the Brickwork course. Learners will develop and perfect a wide range of skills by working on live construction and building sites.

Previous trips have included; Birmingham WorldSkills event, manufacturers, modular building visits and local building sites.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process. The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.

GCSEs grades1-2 or E to G or equivalent, including Foundation Awards and Entry Level Certificates.

Your next steps...

Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby where they could gain an HNC/HND in Construction, or move on to other universities. There are a wide range of employment opportunities in the building trade business.
