Course Summary

Engineering is a practical vocational course for students who could follow careers in many different types of industry with the chance to specialise in different types of engineering with further study.

Course Details

There has never been a more exciting time to get into engineering, the industry as a whole in our area is set to achieve a 5% growth by 2024 meaning there is a future need for skilled engineers. Where better to gain these vital skills than in our state of the art engineering facility which includes power measurement instruments, electrical monitors, lathes, milling machines and even boasts a fully working wind turbine engine giving you the perfect opportunity to gain real experience in this fast paced industry. You will also get involved in the all important theoretical learning that comes through math's for technicians, engineering drawing and computer aided design. Industry based work placements will give you the chance to gain hands-on experience. Alongside work placements there are opportunities for activities and trips, a previous trip has included to the Drax power station. We also have guest speakers which as previously included talks from University Centre Grimsby, the RAF, apprenticeships, UCAS online fair and Waterline Summit.

Your work at level 2 will include learning about working safely in an engineering environment, using and communicating technical information, wiring and testing electrical panels/components, assembling and testing electronic circuits as well as math's for technicians, engineering drawings and computer aided design. This level 2 course will include components of mechanical as well as electrical engineering.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process. The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.


4 GCSEs grade 3 or above, or equivalent, including Math's and English Language at grade 4 or above with science preferred.

Your next steps...

Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby or other other University. Potential employment paths include: Engineering Technician, Wind Turbine Technician, Mechanical Fitter, Machinist/toolmaker, Design Engineer, Mechanical Engineer and Electrical Engineer.
