Course Summary

With the automotive industry constantly evolving, your skills will remain in high demand, opening doors to long-term career growth and a rewarding future.

Your core training will be hands on and practical, with sessions in our industry standard workshops, including the new Elite Centre; our sustainable energy engineering hub. All our courses focus on the future, including carbon awareness and electric and hybrid vehicle maintenance, operation and replacement offering hi-tech equipment to train and prepare for employment.

Course Details

Level 3 students will focus on electric and hybrid removal and replacement.

Health, safety and good housekeeping – Learn the essential safety protocols and maintain a clean, organised workspace to ensure a safe working environment in the workshop

Supporting job roles in the automotive work environment – Understand the different roles within an automotive environment and how teamwork and communication contribute to business success

Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment – Gain hands-on experience with materials, tools, and precision measuring devices used in vehicle repairs and maintenance

Identify and agree motor vehicle customer service needs – Develop customer service skills to effectively understand and address customer concerns while explaining technical issues clearly.

Routine light vehicle maintenance – Learn to perform routine maintenance tasks like oil changes, brake inspections, and fluid checks to keep vehicles in good working order

Removing and replacing light vehicle engine units and components – Master the techniques for safely removing and replacing engine components, ensuring precision and proper reassembly

Removing and replacing light vehicle electrical units and components – Learn to safely remove and replace electrical components, such as alternators and sensors, using diagnostic tools to troubleshoot faults

Removing and replacing light vehicle chassis units and components – Focus on removing and replacing chassis components like suspension parts and steering assemblies to ensure vehicle safety and handling

Inspecting light vehicles using prescribed methods – Develop skills to carry out vehicle inspections, identify issues, and use diagnostic tools to ensure vehicles meet safety and performance standards

Overhauling light vehicle engine mechanical units – Learn to overhaul engine components, including pistons and cylinder heads, ensuring they meet manufacturer specifications for optimal performance

Removing and replacing light vehicle driveline units and components – Gain hands-on experience in removing and replacing critical driveline components, such as axles and driveshafts, to maintain smooth vehicle operation

Overhauling light vehicle transmission units – Learn to dismantle, inspect, and reassemble transmissions to resolve issues with shifting, noise, or power loss

Overhauling light vehicle steering and suspension units – Gain expertise in overhauling steering racks, shock absorbers, and struts to improve handling and eliminate vibrations or other issues

Removing and fitting of basic light vehicle mechanical, electrical and trim (MET) components and non-permanently fixed vehicle body panels – Learn how to remove and replace mechanical, electrical, trim components, and non-permanent body panels, ensuring high-quality repairs

Identifying customer needs – Hone your customer service skills by learning to effectively communicate with customers and diagnose their vehicle issues accurately

Diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults – Learn how to identify and troubleshoot both mechanical and electrical faults using diagnostic tools and in-depth vehicle knowledge

Overhauling mechanical, transmission, steering and suspension units – Focus on overhauling major vehicle systems, ensuring that engines, transmissions, and suspension units are restored to optimal working condition

How will it be delivered and assessed?

When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.

Entry requirements

Level 3 – 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and maths
